Ryley with his "Nachos Blairos."
So while on our regular journey to Sam's Club a few months back to rush the frozen food section for items like chicken, fish, broccoli, strawberries, etc. that we can't find that level of quality for the price, Ryley decided we'd buy some raw shrimp. We usually buy the 3 lb. package of colossal cooked shrimp...but he had his heart set on the raw stuff. This was unknown territory for me.
These shrimps were gray. They had legs. And a shell and veins and everything.
It didn't seem that horrifying until he decided to make them this past Sunday. The thawed, raw shrimps were just laying there, legs now useless, heads cut off, and like a cruel joke they still had their shells...as if that would protect them.
Now those of you who know Ryley well, it's shocking enough that he would offer to cook dinner. He never cooked before I met him...not beyond heating up a can of soup. Since we've married, he has learned a few things here and there, perfecting the art of "Nachos Blairos," and also his famous hot wings.
He searched the internet for a recipe for shrimp, and eventually came up with his own version. Here is the final product:
Cajun Shrimp
1 lb. raw shrimp, de-tailed, de-veined
2 TB unsalted butter
2 tsp. olive oil
1/2 tsp. paprika
1/2 tsp. cayenne pepper
3/4 tsp. garlic powder
1/2 tsp. onion powder
1/4 tsp. salt
1/4 tsp. black pepper
1/2 tsp. oregano
chopped parsley
1. Season the shrimp with the spices above. You can also add hot sauce; he went with Frank's Red Hot.
2. Melt butter in pan or wok over medium-high heat, drizzle olive oil into pan.
3. Just before butter browns, add the shrimp one at a time to the pan. Cook approx. 2 minutes on each side.
Meanwhile, I cooked up some linguine noodles and a garlic cream sauce. THE SHRIMP WERE GENIUS. I am never looking back...no more pre-cooked shrimps for me! As tragic as it was to see the beheaded gray shrimp before we de-shelled, de-legged, and de-veined, I am sure they would have been fine sacrificing themselves to be my supper if they knew how delicious they were.
In other culinary news around our household, Sawyer is intensely interested in what Ryley and I put in our mouths. His obsession went to a whole new level over the weekend. He was sitting in Ryley's lap while Ryley was eating pineapple.
Ryley puts pineapple to lips. Sawyer opens mouth wide. Ryley takes another piece of pineapple. Wide-mouthed, wide-eyed Sawyer.
After 5 pieces of pineapple, Sawyer started to panic. He sees pineapple, opens mouth, hollers, growls, shoves fists into mouth, grabs for pineapple, grabs at Ryley's mouth.
I had in my mind that we were going to wait until 6 months to introduce rice cereal, but I don't know if I can hold this hungry boy off much longer.
